I had a dream one night that I was a singer making her debut at a club.
The patrons were utterly uninterested, and my delivery was weak at the
beginning because I had no confidence. But as the song progressed I grew
braver, and by the end I was belting out the words and everyone was
shouting along. The chorus I remember:
I always get whatever I want
I always get whatever I need
I remembered the hook too, and from these two elements I constructed this
song, christened The Upbeat Song by Steve because there is such disparity
between the words and the melody.
Interpret the lyrics how you like, but the chorus at least is literally
true--I have found, if I want something desperately enough, I get it, and
then I discover it's not what I thought it was. By making this discovery,
I guess I get what I need.
It was literally years later before I realized the hook is actually a
slowed-down takeoff of Edge's guitar hook in U2's "The Fly." I had really
hoped I was the genius who came up with it. Oh well.
